Listen first to locals, then bargain with confidence as if you knew exactly what the ride should cost. If the driver asks for more when you get there, just give him the agreed amount and walk away. With a couple, the driver may say the price was for one person, so make sure it's clear before the start. Read about other scams and hassles here.
You might not believe it, but the beds on an overnight bus and especially an overnight train can be some of the most relaxing sleeping experiences on your trip and what's better than waking up in your destination?
Locals might not have AC, but when they do (on a bus or train) they crank it up high and nothing is worse than 11 hours shivering in your shorts.
You'll always feel more secure if you only have one bag and carry it with you at all times. If you're sleeping, lock it to your seat. If it must go on top of a bus or in the trunk of a taxi, lock it up, keep your eyes on it and then consider getting your bag before paying your fare in case the driver tries any funny business.
